Lake St. Clair Bass, Mayfly Progression 06-16-2016
All mayflies are not made the same and the bass know it. The first round of hatches start out small and black, the next round get a little larger but are still black, then the mayfly bite really takes off when the larger, golden mayflies arrive on the scene.
They have arrived…
These photos were taken at the Nautical Mile BP gas station at 9 Mile and Jefferson. You can get a great look at the hatch by checking the wall of your favorite tackle shop or gas station. In this case, we can clearly see the second round mayfly and the third round mayfly in one shot. Because of the camera angle both look the same size but the black one is noticeably smaller.
There are a number of ways to take advantage of the way bass key on these juicy morsels. One is to catch one of those days where the wind dies to nothing and the bass leave a ring on the surface while taking mayflies off of the surface. The other is to chase down slicks of mayfly husks and work in and around them.
